What Is a Tissue Saree? Fabric, Drape and Care
Koshnika 3 min read
A tissue saree is a very light, semi-transparent saree woven with metallic zari thread, which gives the cloth a soft shimmer that shifts as you move. The classic version uses silk in the warp and zari in the weft, which is why light passes through it almost like gauze. Cotton, viscose and bamboo-based tissue sarees follow the same idea at lower prices.
The word comes from the French tissu, meaning fabric, and it has nothing to do with paper tissue. It describes how the cloth looks: thin, glassy and slightly metallic.
What a tissue saree is made of
The metallic weft is the whole point. In a traditional tissue, fine zari runs through the weft, and a silk or cotton yarn forms the warp. Because the zari is so fine and the weave so open, the fabric is gauzy and weighs very little. Banarasi tissue is the best-known type, with Kanjeevaram and Chanderi versions following the same logic.
Newer tissue sarees use bamboo, viscose or polyester blends with a metallic thread spun in. The cloth is lighter on the pocket and easier to care for, but it will not have the weight or the long life of a silk and real-zari piece. Read the fabric line on the label: it should tell you what the base yarn is.

How a tissue saree drapes
Tissue holds a crisp pleat and a firm pallu, which makes it easy to drape and easy to keep set through a long evening. It does not cling. The trade-off is that it can feel slightly stiff against the skin and the zari can catch on rough jewellery, so keep the first wear simple.
Colour looks different under different light. Gold and old-gold tissues glow under lamps and look softer in daylight, which is why they are a festive favourite. Pastels in tissue read as quiet, with a low shimmer rather than a shine.
Is a tissue saree good for festive wear
Yes, and it is one of the better festive choices because it looks dressed up without carrying weight. It suits pujas, Diwali evenings, sangeet nights and daytime weddings. In a humid city it is more comfortable than a heavy brocade, though it is not as breathable as cotton, so a long afternoon in peak summer is better served by a lighter fabric. Our festive sarees collection shows the range.
Tissue sarees at Koshnika
Our tissue sarees are machine-made, not handloom, and we say that plainly. If you want to try the fabric, the Golden Tissue Saree is worth looking at. It is an old-gold tissue with geometric and bird motifs and gold-toned tassels on the pallu, which suits a traditional festive look. ₹2,299, blouse piece included.
For something softer, the Myna Sage Grey Bamboo Tissue Saree blends metallic zari into bamboo yarn, so it is vegan, and carries a digitally printed vine-and-bird design. It is light enough for a daytime function. ₹2,450, blouse piece included.
If you are comparing woven styles, our guide to what a Jamdani weave is explains how a different light weave is made, and our types of saree fabric guide covers the rest.
How to care for a tissue saree
- Dry clean the saree, especially if it has real zari. Washing at home can tarnish the metallic thread.
- If the label allows a hand wash, use cold water and a mild detergent, and do not wring.
- Dry in the shade, never in direct sun.
- Iron on low heat with a cloth between the iron and the saree.
- Store folded in muslin, and refold along new lines every few months so the zari does not crack at the creases.
Every Koshnika saree is 5.5 m with a 0.8 m blouse piece, with free shipping, cash on delivery and 48-hour returns.
