Does Modal Shrink? What Happens in the Wash
Koshnika 3 min read
Does modal shrink? Yes, a little, and almost always because of heat rather than the fabric itself. A modal saree washed in cold water and dried in shade keeps its size. Warm water, a hot dryer or hard wringing is where it loses length and goes stiff.
Modal is a semi-synthetic fibre made from beech wood pulp. Sewing references put its shrinkage at roughly half that of plain rayon, and there is no single fixed figure, because the mill finish and any cotton in the blend change the result. So the useful question is not whether it shrinks but what makes it shrink.
Does modal shrink in the first wash?
It can, slightly. Regenerated cellulose fibres relax the first time they get properly wet, and a saree that has sat folded for months settles a little. Over 5.5 metres you are unlikely to notice a few millimetres. You will notice it on a small piece.
That small piece is the 0.8 metre blouse piece that comes with the saree. If you plan to have it stitched, wash it once, cold, before it goes to the tailor. A blouse cut from unwashed fabric is the one that feels snug after the first wash, and it is a completely avoidable complaint.
What actually makes modal shrink
Three things, in order of damage. Heat is the first: hot water and machine drying pull the fibre tight. Agitation is the second: a long, rough spin cycle felts the surface and tightens the weave. Wringing is the third, and the one people underestimate. Twisting wet modal stretches it out of shape in one direction, and it then springs back unevenly as it dries, which looks like shrinkage even when the length has not changed.
Fibre blends matter too. Modal blended with cotton behaves more like cotton, and cotton shrinks more than modal in a warm wash. Ask for the composition on any listing before you assume the label tells you the whole story. Our modal vs cotton saree comparison covers where the two part ways.

How to wash a modal saree so it does not shrink
- Use cold water, around 30°C at most. Cold is the whole trick.
- Use a mild liquid detergent and a gentle cycle, or wash by hand for a few minutes without scrubbing.
- Do not wring it. Roll the saree in a dry cotton towel and press the water out.
- Dry in shade, flat or over a wide line. Never a tumble dryer, and never direct sun.
- Iron on medium heat with a cotton cloth over any printed area, while the fabric is still very slightly damp.
- Skip fabric softener most washes. Modal is soft already and softener only coats the fibre.
The full routine, including storage, is in how to care for your modal saree.
What to do if your modal saree has already shrunk
If the damage is mild, you can get part of it back. Soak the saree in cool water with a spoonful of hair conditioner for ten minutes, press the water out without wringing, then lay it flat on a clean towel and ease it gently back toward its length, working from the centre outwards. Let it dry flat in shade.
This recovers light shrinkage. It does not undo a hot dryer cycle, and it will not fix a printed border that has puckered. If that has happened, a professional press is the better bet.
Modal vs viscose on shrinkage
Modal is the safer of the two. Viscose loses much of its strength when wet, which makes it easier to stretch and shrink on a first wash, especially in warm water. Modal was developed to fix exactly that weakness. If shrinkage worries you, modal vs viscose lays out the rest of the difference.
