Magenta Chanderi saree with Bandhni-print dots, a saree to wear for Gujarati New Year — Koshnika

For Gujarati New Year 2026, wear a new or freshly washed saree in a festive colour, and a Bandhni-print is the natural choice. Bestu Varas falls on Tuesday, 10 November 2026, the morning after Diwali, so you are dressing for temple visits, family calls and touching elders' feet, not a late night. Pick something light that you can sit, bend and walk in.

That date is for New Delhi in IST. Diwali is on Sunday, 8 November, and Kartika Amavasya runs into Monday, 9 November. Regional panchangs differ, and outside India the New Year can land a day either side, so check your own city's calendar before you plan.

What saree to wear for Gujarati New Year

The one firm custom is new or freshly washed clothes. There is no fixed colour for the day. Most families lean towards red, maroon, magenta, pink or yellow, the shades that read as auspicious, with a bright border. A saree you own and have never worn counts as new, so you do not need to shop.

Think about the hours instead. Bestu Varas starts early with a diya at the doorway and fresh rangoli, then a visit to the temple or haveli, then a long round of Saal Mubarak greetings. You will be in and out of a car and on your feet. That rules out anything heavy and anything that needs adjusting every ten minutes.

Why a Bandhni-print suits Bestu Varas

Bandhani is Gujarat's own tie-dye craft, so a dotted saree on this day sits naturally. Small repeated dots read as texture, hold up through a crowded morning and look good in a diya-lit room. Our Bandhni-print sarees follow the traditional dot layouts, but they are machine-printed, not tied by hand. A genuinely tied Bandhani takes weeks of work and costs many times more.

If you want the craft explained, read what Bandhani is. If you are comparing it with the wave pattern you will also see in shops, Bandhani vs Leheriya covers the difference.

Which fabric: Chanderi or modal

Chanderi is the dressier one. It is light and slightly sheer, and crisp enough to hold its pleats through a long morning of visits. Modal is softer, falls more fluidly and creases less, which makes it the easier choice if you will be in a car most of the day.

My rule: if the day is mostly home and family, wear modal. If there is a haveli darshan and a group photograph at the end, wear Chanderi.

Sort these before 10 November

  1. Get the blouse stitched now. Tailors are booked solid in Diwali week, and every Koshnika saree comes with a 0.8 m unstitched blouse piece.
  2. Wash or air the saree a day early if it has been in storage, so it counts as freshly washed.
  3. Pin the pleats and the pallu. You will be touching feet, and a loose pallu will not forgive it.
  4. Wear flat footwear you can take off easily at the temple door.

Two Bandhni-print sarees to look at

If you want to try Bandhni on Chanderi, Magenta Bandhni Chanderi Saree is worth looking at. The magenta is a festive colour that does not need much else, and the Chanderi base holds a pleat. ₹2,010, blouse piece included.

For an easier day, Sindhu – Midnight Blue Modal Saree has trailing dot waves and a red border on soft modal. ₹1,930, blouse piece included.

Both are machine-printed, 5.5 metres of saree plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece, with free shipping across India, cash on delivery and 48-hour returns. Browse the full Bandhni sarees or the wider festive sarees collection. If you are still planning Diwali itself, see what saree to wear for Diwali.
