Viscose is one of those fabrics you have almost certainly worn without knowing its name. A viscose saree is soft, fluid and cool, and it turns up under a few different labels, which is exactly why it confuses people. Here is what it really is and when it earns its place in your wardrobe.
What a viscose saree is
Viscose is a plant-based fabric made from wood pulp, often sold as art silk or vegan silk. It is not real silk and not synthetic polyester; it sits in between, a semi-natural fibre prized for its silk-like drape at a fraction of the price. No animals are involved, so it is vegan.
How it is made
Wood pulp is processed into a soft fibre, then spun and woven into a smooth, lightly lustrous cloth. Because the surface is even, it takes print beautifully, which is why viscose carries block print and Kalamkari-style patterns so cleanly. How it feels and drapes
Light, cool and fluid. Viscose falls in soft folds and moves with you, closer to silk than cotton in feel. It is softer than cotton and cooler than polyester, which makes it comfortable for long wear. The trade-off is that it is delicate when wet, so it needs a gentle hand.
How to care for it
Dry clean is the safe route for a printed viscose saree. If you do wash at home, use cold water and a mild detergent, never wring it, and dry it flat in shade. Iron on low. Treated kindly, viscose keeps its drape and colour for years.
When to wear a viscose saree
Daytime and semi-formal occasions suit it best: office, lunches, house functions and summer events. It gives you the look of silk with none of the heat, so it is a smart pick when you want to feel dressed without being weighed down.
