The vegan silk saree brands in India worth knowing are Koshnika, Shobitam, Hand N Yarns, Kosigam, Taneira and ShopNaya. None of them sell silk, and that is the point. Vegan silk is a category label covering banana silk, bamboo silk, modal and viscose, so the useful question is not which brand is most ethical but which fibre a brand actually stocks and whether it will tell you the composition.

What vegan silk means before you shortlist a brand
Vegan silk is not a fibre. It is a shelf. Four things sit on it, and they behave nothing like each other.
- Banana silk. Bast fibre stripped from the banana pseudostem, mechanically extracted from agricultural waste. Dry hand, textured, holds a zari border flat.
- Bamboo silk. Bamboo pulped and chemically respun into viscose. Soft, cool, fluid fall, the coolest of the four in heat.
- Modal. Beech pulp regenerated the same way but with a finer, stronger filament. Very soft, holds colour well, washes better than plain viscose.
- Viscose. The generic version of the above, from mixed wood pulp. Cheapest, prints beautifully, weakest when wet.
Two of those are mechanically extracted plant fibre and two are chemically regenerated cellulose. All four are vegan. Vegan silk saree brands in India, and what each actually sells
Koshnika. Us. Banana silk, bamboo silk, modal and viscose, printed with Madhubani-inspired, Kalamkari-inspired and block-print-inspired motifs. Rs 1,830 to Rs 2,950, blouse piece included, direct to customer only.
Shobitam. The largest catalogue in this space and the one most people find first. Banana silk, bamboo silk and modal across a wide price range, and it ships internationally, which matters if you are buying from outside India.
Hand N Yarns. A Chennai boutique that describes itself as India's first dedicated vegan silk label. Small, focused, and one of the few that leads with the ethics rather than treating it as a tag.
Kosigam. Works specifically with banana fibre sarees. Narrow range, but if banana is the fibre you want rather than a viscose standing in for it, that focus is worth something.
Taneira. A Titan-owned retail chain that launched a vegan saree line in 2022. The advantage here is physical stores, so you can feel the fabric before paying, which no online listing solves.
ShopNaya. Tamil Nadu handloom vegan silk, ethically sourced, smaller catalogue, and closer to a weaver-facing model than a print house.
At the designer end, Anita Dongre and JJ Valaya have both put out plant-based collections, with Valaya using TENCEL Luxe. Beautiful, and priced where you would expect a designer label to be priced.
A note on how we work, since it is the sort of thing a buying guide should say plainly: our sarees are machine-printed onto vegan fabric, rooted in traditional motif vocabularies rather than reproducing artisan technique. That is a different product from a handloom weave and we would rather you knew which one you were buying.
What to check before buying from any of them
- Composition, in numbers. Vegan silk on its own tells you nothing. Ask which fibre and in what percentage.
- Whether the zari is real. Metallic zari is usually fine, but some traditional zari uses silk core thread, which quietly undoes the vegan claim on an otherwise plant-based saree.
- Thread and finishing. Stitching thread and blouse-piece lining are the two places silk slips back in unannounced.
- Length. A full saree is 5.5 metres with a 0.8 metre blouse piece. Anything shorter should be priced lower.
- Return window. Fabric hand is impossible to judge from a photograph. If a brand will not take a return, you are carrying all the risk.
What vegan silk sarees cost in India
Expect Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,500 for a printed vegan silk saree from a direct-to-customer brand, Rs 3,500 to Rs 8,000 at retail chains once store overheads are in the price, and Rs 15,000 upward for designer labels. Below about Rs 900 you are buying thin viscose with vegan used as a marketing word rather than a material fact.
