How to Care for Your Modal Saree (and Make It Last)

Navy modal saree with red border, easy to care for — Koshnika

Modal is soft, but soft does not mean fragile in the way people fear. Most modal sarees lose their look not from wear but from a hot iron, harsh detergent or a sunny clothesline. Get the basics right and your modal saree care routine takes minutes and buys you years.

Washing

Dry clean is safest for a printed modal saree, at least for the first few washes while the colour settles. If you wash at home, use cold water and a mild detergent, never bleach. Soak briefly, do not scrub the printed areas, and rinse gently. Modal weakens slightly when wet, so handle it with a light hand.

Drying

Never wring it. Press the water out gently between your palms or a towel, then dry it flat or on a padded hanger in shade. Direct sun fades print and dulls the soft sheen that makes modal look good. An hour in shade with a breeze is all it needs.

Ironing

Iron on a low to medium setting while the saree is still slightly damp, or press through a cloth. Modal smooths out easily, so you rarely need high heat. Too hot an iron can leave a shine mark on the fabric that does not come out.

Storing

Fold it loosely and keep it in a cotton cloth or a breathable bag, not plastic, which traps moisture. Refold every couple of months so the same crease does not set into the fabric. Keep it away from direct contact with perfume, deodorant and metal hooks.

Common mistakes

The usual ones: drying in direct sun, ironing too hot, wringing out water, and storing in plastic for months. Each is small on its own, and together they age a saree faster than actually wearing it does.

Quick summary: your modal saree care routine

Cold water, shade drying, low iron, cotton storage. That is the whole of modal saree care, and it is easier than the fabric's reputation suggests.
