The banana silk saree price in India is set by two things above all: how much real banana fibre is in the blend, and how much weight sits in the border.
The spread is wide because banana silk is not a protected term. Nobody is checking. A saree with 70 per cent banana fibre and a saree with 5 per cent can both be listed as banana silk, and the price is often your only clue as to which one you are looking at.
What drives banana silk saree price in India
Blend ratio does most of the work. Banana fibre is stripped from the pseudostem of the banana plant, softened, then usually spun with cotton or viscose so it runs cleanly on a loom. A higher banana content costs more to process and feels drier and more textured in the hand. A low-banana, high-viscose cloth is cheaper to make and feels cold and slippery. Both get sold under the same two words.
Border weight is the second lever. A broad woven zari border adds real material cost and takes longer on the loom, and it is usually the single biggest jump between two sarees that otherwise look alike. Printed motifs across the body add less than most people expect, because printing is fast.
After that the differences get small. Dye quality shows up over a couple of years rather than on day one. GST is 5 per cent on sarees and is normally already inside the listed price in India, so it is not a hidden add-on. Brand name accounts for far less of the gap than product pages would like you to believe.
The price bands, and what each one actually buys
Under ₹1,200. Assume predominantly viscose with a token amount of banana fibre. It will look fine in photographs and feel cold and fluid rather than dry and grained. Buy it knowing what it is, and pay a viscose price for it.
₹1,200 to ₹1,800. Entry banana silk. Plain or lightly printed body, narrow border, moderate banana content. Reasonable for a first try if you want to test whether the fabric suits you before spending more.
₹1,800 to ₹3,000. The sweet spot for most buyers. Decent banana content, a proper woven border rather than a stuck-on one, and a body with enough substance to hold a pleat. This is where the fabric starts doing the thing it is good at, which is looking dressed without weighing anything.
₹3,000 to ₹5,000. Heavier zari, richer weave density, more elaborate pallu work. Worth it if you want one saree to carry a wedding function rather than a festive lunch.
₹5,000 and above. Heavy zari and elaborate loom work, sometimes with a fibre certification attached. A real category, but a small one, and you should be asking for a composition breakdown at that price.

Under about ₹1,200, the maths stops working for a genuine banana-fibre cloth. Decortication and softening cost money before a single metre is woven. If a listing gives no composition at all and sits below that line, treat it as a viscose saree with a banana story attached.
The other signal is the border. Look at it on the hanger before it is draped. Banana silk holds a zari border unusually flat, and that is one of the real pleasures of the fabric. If the border is already puckering in the product photo, the weave tension is off and no price makes that a good buy.
When a high price is not justified
A ₹6,000 banana silk saree needs to earn it in visible weight. Broad zari, dense weave, worked pallu. If you are looking at a plain body with a thin border at that price, you are paying for positioning rather than cloth.

Ask for the composition. A seller who knows their cloth will give you a percentage without hesitating. Then feel it if you can: dry and slightly grained is banana silk, cold and fluid is viscose.
